CHAPTER 10

I spent most of that night tossing and turning from all the unanswered questions churning in my mind. Though I had no idea who had killed Shania Thompson, I had it currently narrowed down to the three suspects that were at the top of my list.

Up before the sun, I got ready and headed over to Jerry’s place to drop off Romeo, trying not to think too hard about the investigation. I had work to do and needed to ensure that today was a success. After all, as a business owner, I had bills to pay and payroll to meet.

I rang the doorbell, and Jerry answered with a yawn. He wore a pair of pajamas that featured a bunch of “Flying V” guitars.

“Come on in, buddy,” Jerry said, scratching his belly and yawning again. “Want a cup of coffee? I could sure use one.”

Though I’d already had a couple cups of coffee at the hotel, I was always interested in more. I needed to stay caffeinated to make it through the busy day ahead. “Sure, a cup of coffee would be great,” I said, stepping into the foyer.

Letting Romeo off the leash, I watched as he darted out of sight, and a multitude of nails clicking on the hardwood flooring filled the otherwise quiet house. Romeo, Hendrix, and Lexie were already starting their shenanigans.

Jerry and I went into the kitchen, and he motioned to the Keurig. It was a newer model and had a little carousel next to it that held various types of coffee pods, both regular and decaf. “Help yourself to whatever you want,” he said. “You know where the mugs are.”

I found a pod of the strongest coffee he had—Café Bustelo—and put it into the machine, placing a mug emblazoned with a Fender Stratocaster on the drip tray. I pressed a button, and the machine started brewing my single cup. Once done, I put some half-and-half in the coffee and lumbered over to Jerry’s breakfast nook, where he was already sitting on a wooden bench, nursing his own cup of coffee.

“So, day two,” he said, glancing out the window at his wife’s flower garden.

“And tomorrow you guys are going to be headlining,” I said, easing onto the bench across from Jerry. “On the main stage.”

“Can you believe it? We’ve been trying to get on the main stage for years. Probably since JamFest started.” He took a slow sip of coffee and smacked his lips together. He let the silence linger a moment, then asked, “So, is this going to be just like a few months ago?”

I blew on my hot coffee, feeling the steam waft up my nose. “What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean,” he said, placing his mug on the table a little too hard. Some of the coffee sloshed out, and he grabbed a nearby napkin and cleaned up the mess.

“I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean,” I said, eyeing my friend suspiciously.

“Are you going to get involved in this murder investigation?” He took another sip of coffee, his eyes locked onto mine the entire time.
